Absorption of electromagnetic radiation emitted from the centre of an ionic cloud by outer layers of the
emitting vapour, which are cooler than the centre.
Note 1: The intensity measured at the centre of a line is less than the intensity measured on either side
of the centre.
Note 2: In extreme cases, the intensity at the centre of the line is so weak that only the wings remain,
giving the appearance of two fuzzy lines.
